Daniel Solakian, pictured here at 19, traveled from Glendale, CA to study Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley and share his knowledge with curious kids and concerned caretakers during the Day in the Bay at Oracle park on Saturday, November 2, 2019. The numerous demos and informative posters took a year of foundational classes to begin understanding, but the knowledge sprouted and kept the wide-eyed question-answer dynamic going between him as a facilitator, and the kids as receptacles that spit out “oooohs” and strings of “why?” ‘s until their hunger to understand was sated.
The Northern Lights over a mountain side across a frozen lake in the middle of the Yukon winter in Dawson City, Canada, January 9, 2020. The first night the VW Vanagon arrived in this remote town, the night dipped to below -50 degrees, and the distinction between Fahrenheit and Celsius stopped mattering as the vehicle (and everything in it) froze overnight. The Downtown Hotel stayed warm, while the locals kept company and shared nothing but love and thrill in the shared time in the sacred Northern escape from civilization. Deep into the night, the traveling party had ingested some LSD in the hours before, and the peaking effects and stunning view landed in perfect synchronicity in the early AM of the night, a rare occurrence sent from above in an unusual time of year to welcome the weary travelers with a view so much more than worthwhile for their 15 days of travel and weeks of preparation from LA deep into the Yukon Winter.
